We recently completed a fully customized project for one of our long-term clients in Russia, who works in the oil and gas industry. Their local winters are extremely cold, with temperatures often plummeting below -45°C. For this project, we developed dedicated low-temperature pneumatic actuators, fitted with professional sealing parts, cold-resistant lubricants and built to perform steadily even in such extreme climates.
Winters across Russia are famously brutal. Most standard pneumatic actuators are only rated to work between -20°C and +80°C. This client needed equipment for an outdoor pipeline expansion, where temperatures could drop as low as -50°C. They also set a strict requirement: the actuators must run reliably without any faults throughout a five-year maintenance period. To meet these tough standards, we fully reworked our original rack and pinion actuator design from the inside out.
Custom solutions tailored for cold conditions

Low-temperature seals made with HNBR and PTFE We normally use NBR (nitrile rubber) seals for standard actuators. For this Russian project, we switched to specialized low-temperature HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber) paired with modified PTFE. These sealing components stay flexible even at -55°C, stopping air leaks and keeping the piston moving smoothly. Every batch of seals goes through strict testing before assembly.

Arctic-grade lubricating grease Good lubrication is key to long service life for pneumatic actuators. Ordinary lithium-based grease will harden like wax once the temperature falls below -30°C, leading to stuck parts and higher starting torque. We worked with a professional lubricant supplier to create synthetic PFPE grease, whose pour point is lower than -65°C. It stays soft and functional in bitter cold, cutting friction by 40% at low temperatures. What’s more, it resists chemical damage from the de-icing agents commonly used on local pipelines.

Optimized materials for harsh outdoor use The main body of our rack and pinion actuators is built from extruded aluminum alloy, finished with a thick hard anodized layer. This extra treatment protects the unit against corrosion caused by road salt and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Rigorous performance testing Before delivery, every custom actuator was placed in a professional environmental chamber for a 72-hour continuous cold test at -52°C. Our team closely checked its starting torque, operating speed and sealing performance. The units also completed 50,000 continuous cycles under simulated icy conditions, with no issues during the whole test.
